Thanks to Ryan Ogaard a new online magic shop is here, which is really aimed for magicians, both beginner and advanced. I myself had been witness on how this shop came to be. From it's conception and planning, until the final stages of fine tuning, until its opening.

The Cutting Edge- Another Magic Store in the Philippines

After my MA classes my girlfriend and I went to Trinoma to have some lunch. It took us more than 30 minutes from UP to get there because of the unusually heavy traffic. Anyway after we had lunch, I asked her if we could go to a certain store which I found out while searching on the internet. Apparently this store sold special decks like vipers, ghost decks, black tigers and other trick decks like stripper decks.

So went around the mall and we soon found that store. At first you won't notice that they sell magic stuff because the first thing you'll see are the Swiss knives and other special knives. The magic props are to be found on one part of the store.

I browsed through the decks they have and I was actually quite delighted (even though I don't use special decks due to the fact that they are so expensive) to see those decks that I usually see only in internet shops. Behind the decks, I've found something more interesting: books.

I was surprised to see Mark Wilson's Complete Course on Magic there as much as I would like to have that book, I was really short of cash. I also saw some DVDs like Trilogy by the Buck Brothers. I know these DVDs are expensive since these are original ones.

Anyways what I like about this shop is that they sell stuff that are not cheap imitations and at least their high prices are justified by it. It is a good break from all the other shops around Metro Manila. However their product range isn't that extensive and their staff is not as friendly.

All you could find there are card decks, A PK set, some books and a few DVDs. I don't think they sell beginner sets either. Maybe their target are those magicians of intermediate to advanced level. I may still have to compare prices though at internet shops because they might be charging too much.

Anyways at least it's a good sign that the latest magic hopefully would be available here in this country.

My newest creation: Svengali Effects- Coming Soon

I was quite disappointed when I visited the new magic kiosk in Alabang Town Center. The old one sadly has just disappeared as if by magic (no pun intended) The staff there were really friendly and there was always a healthy exchange of magic tricks there.

Then there came a new magic kiosk basically selling the same products but the staff were all different. I went there to ask if they had ITR and they just said to me the price and soon the staff there went back promoting their Svengali deck to other people of course leaving me hanging there not even answering my other questions about it.

I was really disappointed on how they promote their products. How dare they say that David Blaine and Eric Mana used Svengali decks into their acts. I mean they are both good magicians that don't need such trick deck for their acts. If you're wondering what tricks could be done with a Svengali deck here's a video of it




As you could see there is really more than one of a "selected" card. However when you use this deck you can never do again the same tricks for the same group of people because the moment you do that everything will be revealed and the trick will be spoiled. Also this deck can never be inspected by the audience.

So in my frustration, I left the kiosk went straight home and started playing with my cards.Then all of a sudden I was struck by inspiration and soon i was creating a new trick already.

I tested the new trick I have invented by showing it to my grandmother. She was really amazed and asked me to do it again. Then she was more amazed with it as I show her that there is really only one of her card and all cards are different.It means that I have no duplicate cards nor short cards in it.So in other words I am successful in using an ordinary deck of cards in doing Svengali Deck Tricks.

I'll be posting a video of my newest masterpiece soon and maybe hopefully I could show that shop that they shouldn't leave customers hanging especially if they are real magicians. I'll show them that their inferior quality Svengali which "cracks" when bent is really no match to a magician who is really dedicated to the craft. Also I want to show them that a magician is very different from staff who merely know how to do the trick.Honestly I'm still annoyed at them and I wish that the old shop would return because the people there are much better and there is a real magician performing there.

Magic Shop- Finally

My girlfriend and I were wandering around the malls in North Edsa last Saturday to have a break from all the stress that we have been receiving from work the past week. We went to SM North and looked for a kiosk: "It's Magic", a magic shop that caters not only to beginner magicians but also to professional ones.

It might be quite confusing if you try to find the shop because it is located near the cinema. Well although SM North's cinemas are on the same floor, they are divided in two sections and each section is located at opposite ends of the mall. The two cinemas' lobbies also look the same that's why it's confusing if you try to find a shop that is near the cinemas.

It is a small kiosk and there is a magician that regularly performs or demonstrates the products that they sell. I was actually looking for a close up mat and sponge balls and to my surprise the prices were really high. Compared to the prices in online shops the products there are really very expensive.

Online shops actually sell much cheaper products if I convert them to our local currency. An example of this is the close up mat which is on the average around $10. Well it depends on the size but I think the one that they are selling in that shop measures around 12"x17" Well I'm not sure though about the size but imagine if on the internet that cost around $10 here the price is doubled or sometimes even tripled. Another is the sponge ball well online you could buy for a bag of 10 sponge balls at the average of $0.50 per ball depending on the size. Here one ball, depending from whom you will buy would be about the prize of four or eight balls on an online shop .

I really can't imagine how expensive are the stuff that they have until I noticed a very small cups and balls set. I asked the shop attendant why is that set very small. He just replied "Well you don't really pay for the apparatus you pay for its secret". I was quite disappointed when I heard that because some magicians like me might only require the apparatus itself not it's secret because they already know it.

Well I just thought to myself that it's a business and in order for a business to earn revenue it must offer something more to a customer. In this case it's the trick and it's secret that is being sold as a package. Also for me it's the concept of added value wherein an object becomes more expensive if it undergoes a process rather than buying it just the way it is. Basically it's the same with their stuff wherein they add its secret therefore becoming more expensive.

Maybe another thing is that there aren't any local manufacturer's of magician's stuff here. All must be imported from somewhere else and I think it's what makes it expensive. If only we could remove our colonial mentality that imported stuff are better and start learning how we could make the same stuff locally we might be able to make stuff like this available at least to starting magicians.

Well I'm just hoping that someday they will have a 50% off sale so that I could buy a lot of stuff from the shop. Better yet if they could sell some apparatus without the secret for a much lower price.
